Hair Extensions: The Basics

- Advertisement - data-full-width-responsive="true">

During the festive period you may be looking to treat yourself to a new look before the Christmas and New Year parties start. One of the best ways to do this is with hair extensions, they are great for adding volume and length to hair that may be looking tired and dull. Lots of women have them done regularly so you may have heard about them quite a lot but not really know anything about them.

What exactly are they? How are they fitted? What do they cost?

These are really common questions that, as the owner of an online hair extension retailer, I hear frequently.

In order to reassure those of you who may be considering hair extensions, and may have questions that you’re too embarrassed to ask, I have put together a list of simple questions and answers to help make the decision a little easier.

What Exactly are Hair Extensions?

The term hair extensions refers to any hair that is artificially added to a person’s natural hair with some form of fixing. The most common reasons that people choose to have extensions is to add volume or length to their hair, generally for cosmetic reasons although they can be used to treat hair loss. If they are fitted professionally then it can be nearly impossible to tell if someone is wearing them.

How Are They Attached?

They are many ways to attach hair extensions, but here we will only outline the two most common ways, which are micro rings and glue.

Micro rings are a relatively new technique that is considered to be the least damaging to your hair, as no glue is needed. Micro rings are small metal rings that are clamped onto the hair and have an internal plastic coating to act as grip and prevent the ring from slipping down the hair. Although no glue is used, you can rest assured that the rings will not slip down the hair or drop out. Micro rings are experiencing a huge surge in popularity as more and more people realise that less damage is caused by this type of fixing than the traditional glue method.

Glue in extensions are quite self-explanatory, it is where the extensions are glued to the natural hair using an adhesive. It is a secure way of attaching the extensions, however this can be quite damaging to the hair because the glue can leave unsightly flakes and residue in the hair after a while. It is also quite traumatic to remove extensions that have been glued in, potentially damaging the hair in the process of removal.

What is Remy Hair?

Remy hair is hair that has been gathered and all he cuticles have been kept facing the same way, it is the best kind of hair you can get. Some hair is made into extensions with no regard to which way the cuticles are laying, which can result in extensions that tangle much easier and don’t look as natural.

What is Virgin Hair?

Remy hair is considered to be the best, however it does go through a series of treatments to make it ready for fitting. However, virgin hair has not experienced any chemical treatment at all and maintains a natural shine and texture. Peruvian virgin hair is fast becoming the hair of choice for the more premium market as it is believed the women use special herbs to take care of their hair, leaving it looking extremely healthy and it is claimed it can last up to a year.

How much do extensions cost?

The cost of extensions is dependent on a lot of things, including aspects such as the area you live, whether you need a half head or a full head, the length of the hair you choose and the type of fitting you decide to go for. A reasonable approximation is that you will pay anything between £120-£300 for the extensions you need.
