4 Things That Could Be Contaminating Your Home’s Water Supply

Contamination of a home’s water supply occurs far more frequently than you may think. Water contamination can happen in any type of water, including drinking water.

Contaminated water can cause serious health conditions, such as neurological disorders, reproductive disorders, and gastrointestinal issues.

There are several different types of contaminants which can cause these problems in drinking water, the following being some of the most common:

Buried Storage Tanks

Storage tanks can contain chemicals, gasoline, or any other liquids that could cause contamination to ground water.

All it takes to completely contaminate nearby water is for one of these storage tanks to leak into the ground surrounding water pipes.

It is estimated that over 10 million storage tanks are buried throughout the United States, so it may be wise for you to contact your local city health service to see if there are storage tanks buried nearby that you need to be aware of.

Landfills typically have a protective layer between the ground and the garbage in the landfill to prevent contaminants from seeping out of the landfill.

This layer is usually effective, but on occasion will develop cracks which allow contaminants to seep into nearby water supplies.

Contaminants from landfills can come in the form of everyday household cleaners, battery acid, paint, or any other type of chemical contaminant that comes from a household and is disposed with the rest of the landfill-bound garbage.

Septic Tank Contaminants

A septic tank used by a household, an office, or any other public building, is an underground storage tank for human waste.

The septic tank is designed in a manner which slowly allows the waste to be drained from the underground tank at a rate that is harmless to the environment. On occasion, however, these tanks malfunction due to poor placement, bad construction, or insufficient maintenance.

Contaminants from septic tanks can often introduce viruses and bacteria into a home’s water system, seriously endangering the health of all affected.

Pesticides and Fertilizers

Chemical contamination can occur as a result of crop fertilizers, weed killers and pesticides used on lawns or fields.

These powerful chemical contaminants can quickly seep through the ground and into the water supply. If your water is tasting or smelling strange, look into the chemicals you and your neighbors are using outdoors to see if any are dangerous contaminants.

Although this is not a comprehensive list of all possible water contaminants, these are some of the most common.

If you suspect your home’s water supply is contaminated, an Edmonton water tank specialist from Always Plumbing and Heating advises immediately contacting your plumber, who can test your water for harmful chemicals and bacteria.

Contaminated drinking water can result in some serious health issues, so be sure to resolve the issue as soon as possible if it arises.
