Quite a number of things laying or hanging around the house have much unknown usefulness. The knowledge of a few life hacks can considerably save you time and money, while some household items can be surprisingly used in many ways.

What are these items you ask? Let’s look at the following things that could help save your day;

1. Baking soda

Baking soda has been confirmed a multipurpose agent and most homes have this powder. Baking soda can be used as an exfoliant, deodorant, a shampoo and teeth whitener.

It is also used for the treatment of some health issues which ranges from insect bites to heartburn. It could also be used to eradicate foul smell around the house, cleaning of stains on fingernails, and grease stains. Baking soda is also a vital baking ingredient.

Aluminium foils are useful in keeping leftovers amongst other things. Scrunched up foil can be used to scrub dirty dishes, hung pieces of foils on trees help in warding off birds and a layer of foil on your ironing board helps speed up ironing process.

Rolled up ball of foil can also be used in place of dryer sheets. This is used to help prevent static cling. The foil can also be used to wipe the rust off of chrome when wet.

Nail polish is very useful in many ways around the house. It could be used to seal envelopes if there is no access to glue. It is used to harden threads, which allows it to go through needles with ease.

Nail polish could also be used as a simple glue to help hold some things in place. You could use coloured nail polish to colour-code your keys to help you identify them.

4. Olive oil

Not only is olive oil healthy and amazing for cooking, but it is also be used in different ways around the house. It could also be applied to the skin as a moisturiser and also to control skin breaks and dryness.

Olive oil is been used by the famed actress Sophia Loren who puts it in her bathwater as a beauty treatment. You could also use olive oil as a polish for your furniture. Simply add a small amount of the oil on your duster and wipe away.

5. Uncooked spaghetti

Spaghetti is very popular around the world, and it’s consumed by both young and old. However, apart from being food, spaghetti (uncooked) has numerous uses.

You can stick strands of pasta on top and the sides of the cake, if you want to keep it safe from the elements, before covering the cake with wrap it foils.

This keeps the cake from messing up your frosting. Dried noodles can also be used to make long matches just in case you are in need of one.

There are many things you can do with old glass bottles. They can be used as a rolling pin, pounding things and storing nuts.

You can also plant things in them outside kitchen use. Bigger bottles can also make beautiful aquariums or terrariums. So what say you? Want to get some of those bottles from the attic and put them to good use?

7. Dental floss

Doctors would always advise flossing of the teeth to protect against cavities. Nonetheless, floss can have other practical effects such as cutting cheese or cakes in a neat straight line.

It can be used in lieu of kitchen twine. It can also be used to hold up and air-dry peppers and herbs.

8. Chopsticks


Chopsticks are very common in Asian countries, and it’s been adopted by other continents as a tool to eat food. Asides been used to feed, chopsticks can be used to pick food while grilling, deep frying, stir-frying or sautéing.

They can also be used to scramble eggs, toss salads and stir dry noodles. Chopsticks can also be used to hold hot food or cactus.

9. Metal spoons

Every home has utensils that aid in eating and metal spoons are shockingly used as beauty hack. Who knew?! Simply place a cold spoon over the eyes in the morning to help reduce puffiness. Metal spoons can also be used as plant markers.

You also use to make dipped spoons, by dipping the base of the spoon in melting chocolate and placing it in the freezer overnight. The result is fantastic and tasty.

10. Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes have been used by painters, electricians and a number of professionals to clean spots that are tricky and hard to clean. They can also be used to groom cats, brush hair in small areas such as eyebrows.
